CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Four days later, Martina was in her office putting the final touches on a to-do list of things that needed done in the casino before Saturday’s soft opening, when a bell sounded. Going to investigate, she glanced at her watch and noticed it was ten a.m. Slade wouldn’t be in until noon, she knew. And it was only Gloria and her trainees downstairs. At the top of the stairs she saw what appeared to be an armored truck parked out front. If it was the money delivery for opening day, they would just have to return later with it. Slade was the only one with the combination to the vault.

Reaching the door, she unlocked it and stepped outside. The truck, being it was unfamiliar to her, prompted Martina to take note of the company. It was Brinks, but the city listed below that was St. Louis, Missouri. She thought that strange until recalling something was coming for her from Judge Beckworth in St. Louis. My God, did the gift from Gwyn, whatever it may be, require an armored vehicle? Just then, a man came from the cab with a clipboard in his hand.

“We’re looking for Martina Spalding?”

“That’s me,” Martina said, looking the man over as he studied the shipping order.

“Are you expecting a delivery from St. Louis, ma’am?”

“Miss!” she corrected. “Yes, I am.”

“It seems there is a password associated with the delivery. Would you happen to know what that is, miss?”

“It’s Spider.”

With that, the man thumbed through the papers on the clipboard until he came to a brown envelope. He pulled it free, swiftly tore it open, and pulled out the slip of paper inside. “Will you give me that password again, please?”

“Spider,” she repeated.

Satisfied with that, he went to the truck and banged on the side. “This is the place. Unload it!” he shouted.

The driver of the truck came around just as the rear doors flew open, and two shotgun bearing men hopped out to the ground. A ramp was soon installed and from the truck, loaded onto a heavy duty cart, rolled the hugest antique safe Martina had ever seen, bigger than she had really imagined a safe could possibly be. And what remained of the gold lettering on the front of it read: “RAIZEL HARDWARE COMPANY — Est. 1839, St. Louis, Missouri.” “My!” she said aloud. This was Gwyn’s gift to her; an antique safe that had apparently been in the family for over a hundred years. “That thing must weigh a ton.”

Hearing that, the man with the clipboard nodded ostentat-iously.

Well, if it was too heavy to take upstairs, where then would she put it? It would be rude to send it back. Then the group of numbers she had jotted down, relayed to her by Judge Beckworth, came to mind. And it dawned on her that perhaps it wasn’t the safe, but what was inside it, that was the real gift. That’s when she sprang into action.

“Gentlemen, follow me.” And into the casino she went. The private dining room just off the kitchen wasn’t ideal, but it would have to do for now.
